Pregnenolone is an endogenous neurosteroid that is involved in the steroidogenesis of progesterone, glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, androgens, and estrogens, making it a prohormone. It has been observed to inhibit GABA-gated chloride currents by enhancing receptor desensitization. Pregnenolone is an inhibitor of GABA Receptor and an activator of PXR.An prohormone neurosteroid also a precursor to gonadal steroid hormones and the adrenal corticosteroids.
