During the process of cell apoptosis, especially when some caspases are activated, Z-DEVD-AFC will be cleaved to release AFC, which emits bright fluorescence and acts as a real-time monitor of the apoptotic process. Z-DEVD-AFC is a cell-permeant substrate for caspase-3, which causes a shift in fluorescence uponcleavage of the AFC fluorophore. Z-DEVD-AFC can be used to detect caspase-3-like enzymes activity.
