Erythromycin is a potent macrolide inhibitor of CYP3A4 with antiinflammatory and prokinetic properties. Macrolides belong to a group of antibiotics that bind to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibit protein synthesis. Erythromycin is derived from Streptomyces erythreus and has been shown to inhibit NF-κB transcriptional activation, which leads to the inhibition of cytokine gene expression of IL-8 and lL-6. This mechanism was shown to occur via calcineruin-independent signaling T lymphocytes. A macrolide antibiotic protein synthesis inhibitor. Erythromycin is an antibiotic produced by growth of certain strains of Streptomyces erythreus. This product is composed largely of erythromycin A with small amounts of erythromycins B and C and is recommended for concentration at 100 mg/L. Concentrations between 50 and 200 mg/L have also proven effective in controlling bacterial growth. Erythromycin has been used as a motilin receptor agonist, to block respiratory glycoconjμgate secretion in human airways in vitro, and for selecting plasmid-cured and recombinant lactococcus lactis MG1363 strains.
