部分具有金属光泽,着火点在260℃以上,416℃升华,活泼性低于黄磷,只有高温时反应。极微溶于冷水,不溶于热水、稀酸、二硫化碳和有机溶剂,略溶于无水乙醇,可溶于三溴化磷和氢氧化钠在空气中易吸潮变质。易燃、无毒、无臭,在暗处不发光。接触氧化剂时可引起爆炸。有机分析中用于氢碘酸还原反应。在测定甲氧基时,用以结合反应中生成的碘。有机合成。制造磷酸、磷化氢、五氧化二磷、五氯化磷、三氯化磷和杀虫剂。 电子级红磷是化合物半导体的主要材料之一,可用于合成磷化铟(InP)、磷化镓(GaP)、磷砷化镓铝(AlGaAsP)、磷砷化镓铟(InGaAsP)、磷砷化镓(GaAsP)等化合物半导体。红磷也可用作IC等掺杂的固态磷源。
