Autophagy Inducers
Autophagy is the process by which lysosomes degrade and recycle unnecessary or damaged cellular components. This mechanism helps sustain energy production during nutrient deprivation, supporting cell survival under stress. Beyond its role in adaptation, autophagy can also function as a form of programmed cell death, triggered by conditions such as development, differentiation, neurodegenerative disorders, stress, infection, and cancer.
While autophagy promotes survival in nutrient-starved cells, it also acts as a tumor-suppressive mechanism. Many chemotherapeutic agents induce the formation of abnormal proteins, and autophagy contributes to tumor suppression by degrading these proteins and damaged organelles, thereby restricting cellular proliferation.
Extended or excessive autophagy results in elevated protein and organelle turnover, which can ultimately lead to the death of cancer cells.
For a selection of compounds from Aladdin that stimulate autophagy in diverse disease models—including cancer, fibrosis, and infectious disease—please refer to the representative list provided below.
