ABSTRACT

Synergistic antimicrobial action as a new strategy against various bacteria is attractive in the development of novel antibacterial materials. Based on this, the combination of peppermint oil (PO) and amoxicillin (AM) was constructed in order to achieve a synergistic antimicrobial effect with small amount of antibiotic addition. Then the synergistic antimicrobial PO and AM were introduced into polyvinyl alcohol/gelatin matrix to fabricate excellent antibacterial nanofiber membranes by electrospinning technique. Their morphologies and compositions of the prepared nanofiber membranes were investigated. The antibacterial ability and the antibacterial mechanism of the fabricated nanofiber membranes were determined. The co-incorporation of PO and AM into the nanofiber membranes showed strong antimicrobial activity with good cytocompatibility on intestinal epithelioid cell line 6. Therefore, this combination of PO and AM loaded nanofiber membrane as antibacterial material with synergistic antibacterial mechanism is very promising in the various antibacterial and bacterial inhibition applications.
