ABSTRACT

Hydrazine oxidation assisting water splitting is considered as a promising strategy toward the highly efficient and energy-saving hydrogen acquirement. However, the development of efficient and stable electrocatalysts for hydrazine hydrate oxidation (HzOR) as well as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) still remains challenging. In this study, an interface-coupled Co(OH)2/MoS2 nanosheet array is designed to form a synergistic hierarchical heterostructure on a carbon cloth substrate, which is shown to have superior bifunctional performance for HzOR/HER under alkaline conditions. Benefiting from the abundant electrocatalytic active sites and improved reaction kinetics, the Co(OH)2/MoS2/CC electrode shows superior bifunctional performances with low potentials of −134 and 177 mV at 100 mA cm–2 for HER and HzOR, respectively. For the hydrazine-assisted overall water electrolyzer system (OHzS), the Co(OH)2/MoS2/CC electrode delivers low potentials of 142, 197, and 271 mV to realize 10, 50, and 100 mA cm–2, which proves the promising potential application in large-scale preparation of hydrogen fuel. This strategy put forward a simple way toward robust and economic electrodes for energy-related systems.
