ABSTRACT

As a critical factor in bone regeneration, oxidative stress affects the effectiveness of implantation seriously. Construction of bioactive coatings with ideal antioxidative and osteogenic activities is essential for the repair of bone injury. Here, inorganic cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2NPs) and organic baicalein (BAI)-modified bovine serum albumin (BSA) were used as assembly units to fabricate (CeO2NPs/BAI-BSA)4 coating via the layer-by-layer self-assembly technique. The drug-loaded CeO2NP coating obviously promoted cell adhesion and spreading of MC3T3-E1 cells in the early stage. Moreover, the CeO2NPs/BAI-BSA coating could scavenge both ABTS+• and DPPH• free radicals, and exhibited good antioxidative effect at the cellular level against the negative effect of oxidative stress. In addition, CeO2NP-based coatings exhibited good blood compatibility with low platelet adhesion and almost no damage to erythrocytes. The composite coatings of CeO2NPs and BAI-BSA have antioxidative, osteogenic, and blood-biocompatible properties, serving as a promising strategy for bone repair under oxidative stress.
