Blood and bacterium repellent superhydrophobic coating based on assembly of nanoparticles

ABSTRACT

A new superhydrophobic coating with low surface roughness is prepared by facile spray-coating method for robust blood and bacterium repellent application. The superhydrophobic coating does not only display good water repellency with a large contact angle of 171.4°, but also shows a satisfactory mechanical stability (a contact angle of 151.8° after 100 abrasion cycles). Furthermore, the superhydrophobic coating is evaluated to apply in blood and bacterium repellency. It is observed that the blood droplet can roll off the surface within 0.5 s, and the bacteria count is reduced from 120 cfu/cm 2 to 5.0 cfu/cm 2 . The good comprehensive performance is attributed to good superhydrophobicity and low surface roughness. This work thus provides a facile method to improve blood and bacterium repellent performance of superhydrophobic coating for biomedical application.
